The overall theme in social studies for 3rd grade is “Communities.” We will be using the Social Studies Alive textbook Our Community and Beyond and its related materials.
A few topics we will explore this year:
*How do people become part of our country?
*How do people improve their communities?
*How does supply and demand directly affect our social system?
Our third grade enrichment unit, The Middle Ages, will compare the elements of a medieval castle community to a present day community.
In our study of Austin, we will explore how Austin became a community.
Thematic picture books as well as creative writing will also be incorporated into our social studies units.
The following field trips will be incorporated into our units of study:
September - Elisabet Ney Museum and Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum
February - Neil Cochran House Museum and George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center
March - Texas State Cemetery and The French Legation
